It was a moment I will never forget.

PENANG football legend Isa Bakar died as he had lived — cracking jokes up to the final hours and teasing and taunting visitors from his hospital bed.

He also died as he had played – delivering that element of surprise like he was in front of goal in a big match.

“Nobody expected it,” said his close friend Datuk Mohd Naina Merican. “The news (of his death) was like a bolt out of the blue. We were stunned because he did not show signs that he was going away for good.”

Naina was for some years the manager of the formidable Penang Port Commission (PPC) team, which had Isa as their star striker.

Isa, 58, died on Saturday, a day after he was rushed to the hospital following an unrelenting bout of coughing, with blood in his sputum. He was survived by wife Mazlina Ismail, three daughters and a son. His death was exactly seven years after his brother Ali, another football great, collapsed and died during an international veterans’ match in Singapore, in August 2003.

The actual cause of Isa’s death was not immediately known because he mentioned nothing about his health condition to friends – not even to bosom buddy N. Baskaran.

Baskaran, a steely defender who played alongside Isa in the PPC as well as the Penang state teams in the late 1970s and early 1980s, sounded extremely distressed on the phone yesterday.

“He said he would be up and about by Monday (yesterday). I just don’t know what to say. He was more than a brother to me,” he whispered, sobbing as he told me he had to hang up.

Mistake #1: Buying the Wrong Things
