SNAPPER COVE 2009 CHARDONNAY

………………………………………………………….. .

Marks and Spencer, (75cl, 13.5 per cent) ….

IF this wine was to be receiving an award right now, I think it would have to thank the weather in its acceptance speech. I say this because the long spell of impossibly dry and sunny weather we have, until recently, experienced seemed to perfectly suit its clean, refreshing qualities.

It was opened at the end of a long, dry day spent in the garden, accompanying a chicken dish and a setting sun.

Had it been a wet Wednesday in Whimple, it may have been a different story — apologies to the people of Whimple, but I couldn’t think of anywhere else which began with a ‘W’. Not that this delightful wine lacks its own qualities.

Behind the pleasing name and deliciously simple label (involving a fish playfully bobbing about in water) is a very drinkable drop.

Undoubtedly, though, the blend created by winemaker Adrian Sparks in the Riverina and Orange river valleys of South East Australia was perfectly suited to an antipodean-style climate. You might want to bear this in mind when buying. It should be said that Chardonnay itself has always been a well-matched varietal with hot and sunny weather
